Sula Lipsticks – Review and Swatches
I did end up returning Sula’s natural blush in Forget Me Not. It just wasn’t going to work (tragic, I know.) But I didn’t want to write off the Sula brand just yet and so I headed hopefully back to the display in the hopes of finding non-tested lipsticks. I ended up clutching 3 to my heart (all the way up to the register) – two of them were sealed and one only looked as if it had been opened. The prevailing thought as I paid for them? “I’d look like a huge jerk if I ended up returning these too so I’d better like them!”
Aah the power of
positive threatening thinking.
Like all of the current items in Sula’s cosmetic lineup, each lipstick will cost you $8USD.
One curious thing I’ve noticed is that ULTA gives the title Sula Lipstick for these but the packaging itself states “Sula Natural Lipstick.” If you run a search for natural lipsticks at ULTA these will show up in the results – and the item page does mention that they’re made from all natural ingredients. Here’s the ingredients list for you to decide:
Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Cera alba (Beeswax), Dilinoleic Acid/Propanediol Copolymer, Simmondsia Chinensis ( Jojoba) Seed Oil, Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax, Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil, Copernicia Cerifera (Carnauba) Wax, Polymethylmethacrylate, Silica & Lauroyl Lysine, Natural Flavour, Tocopherol. (+/-) Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Iron Oxides (CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499), Carmine (CI 75470), FD&C Blue No. 1 (CI 42090), FD&C Yellow No. 5 (CI 19140), FD&C Yellow No. 6 (CI 15985), FD&C Red No. 40 (CI16035), Manganese Violet (CI 77742), D&C Red 6, D&C Red 7, D&C Red 33
Like the blushes (and everything else in this line) the packaging is white and flower themed. The lipstick tubes appear to be made of metal (I suspect Aluminum.) Flowers corresponding to the color of the lipstick inside are printed onto the tube. The metal is pretty thin and is reinforced with plastic on the inside – but it’s still a pretty idea. Of course – give me a few months and I guarantee you that the white will be chipped, cracked and scratched away. I’m a clumsy person.
Sula tried really really hard to give you a good idea of what the lipsticks would be like through their packaging. This is probably due to the fact that you can’t actually see the bullet without buying it (or breaking ULTA’s rules and opening them without permission!) As I mentioned above – there are the colored flowers printed onto the metal tubes. There are also color stickers on one end of the tube:
So let’s compare with my swatches!
As i’m sure you can tell – both Quick Escape and Love At First Sight are quite accurate. Awake Till Sunrise threw me for a loop – though. The flowers and bullet made me think it’d be orange, the sticker made me think it’d be red-orange and I couldn’t even place my finger on the color of the swatch.
Quick Escape is a very lovely midtone yellow based pink. Quick Escape was very red-orange. Love At First Sight was a beautiful berry red, a little plummy in darker lighting.
These lipsticks went on smoothly and easily. They didn’t require more than one sweep for the color – but I did obviously have to touch up around the edges.
I was pleasantly surprised by these – they aren’t unpigmented at all. With that said, it seems like each lipstick had a slightly different formula and thus their pigmentation varied. I hear this is true of the other colors in this line – some are more pigmented than others. But none are sheer!
Love at first sight was considerably glossier than the other two shades – and thus it was also sliiiiiiiiiightly less pigmented. But only barely!
I can’t entirely blame the dryness of my lips on the Sulas. I ate a bunch of sunflower seeds and the salt dried out my lips terribly. I actually felt these lipsticks were either average or, in the case of LAFS – moisturizing! I do recommend exfoliating before wearing these if you have dry flakes on your lips that you’d not like to announce to the world. You can see for yourself how the lipstick clings to those dry flakes and patches in the above shots.
These lipsticks will go for about 3-5 hours on me. They hold up reasonably well to drinking and eating (they fade only a bit initially) but doing so shortens their wear time by an hour or two. The only shade that ever felt even slightly drying was Quick Escape and I suspect it’s due to the EVER SO SLIGHTLY THERE shimmer.
The only thing that bothered me is that they don’t fade evenly. The color fades at the center of my lips quickest and will cling on for dear life around the edges so that it looks like impromptu liner.
I’m in love with these lippies and will most likely pick up another two. On a completely random note! Both Love At First Sight and Awake Till Sunrise were slightly scented; fruity with LAFS being more scented than ATS. Quick Escape had no such scent to it, just your typical lipstick smell.
Color Accuracy: 8/10
Overall: B+ (88.8 %)
