Clinique Even Better Makeup/Foundation in 06 Honey – Review and Swatches

A while ago (ie: way back in September!) I felt that I was having problems with my go-to foundation (MAC’s Studio Fix Fluid.) I thought it was breaking me out after months of use with no problems. Those issues have seen been explained away but the problems prompted a search for a new foundation. I wanted something healthier, more natural and moisturizing. I ended up at the Clinique section of my local Sephora and was kindly matched as closely as the poor SA seemed to be able to. My purchase was that of Clinique’s Even Better foundation in #06 Honey.

Clinique Even Better Foundation in #06 Honey

Oh! Advanced warning. This will be a picture-heavy post!

Generic Information:

Clinique offers up a number of foundations to suit all types of skin, coverages and preferences for medium. Even Better is part of a line that is supposed to improve the quality of your skin’s tone, texture and pigmentation. It contains SPF 15 (a combination of octinoxate, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide) to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays. It is also available in 30 shades of varying shades and undertones.

Each bottle contains 1fl oz or 30ml of product and rings in at $26 USD. It’s a little bit pricy compared to drugstore brands but by no means is it a forerunner in the department store area it inhabits.

Packaging:

Even Better comes in a plastic bottle, which you squeeze to get the product out of a nozzle up top. It’s lightweight, classic and sturdy packaging. However the stopper that’s part of the inside screw-on top doesn’t really do much to stop the product from leaking.  I have the compulsive need to clean mine of every few days because it gets messy and gunky.

Color Accuracy:

To be honest, to date, MAC’s NW35 is the only shade I found that matches my skin closely enough. CoverGirl’s old Soft Honey shade also worked relatively well for me. The SA at Sephora took about 20 minutes walking around the store trying to match my rather difficult complexion. As you know, I have some severe discoloration of my face, but I also have discoloration around my neck that i’d now like to show you.

It’s been this way ever since I was a small child, and it makes it rather difficult to work with. On any given season, my body may be closer to the top or bottom half of my neck, which is always two or three distinct shades. I once had an SA attempt to match me based on the darkest shade on my neck and needless to say it went terribly. After going through about 6 different foundations, I settled on Honey. (I also tried Sand (too pink), Beige (a bit too light), Cream Caramel (too orange) and Ginger (way too dark.) Honey was a bit too pale but the SA assured me it would blend well and oxidize. Anyway, here’s what you’re all wanting to see~

Sephora and Clinique provide the below color swatches for Honey:

Clinique's Honey Swatch

Sephora's Honey Swatch

And Sephora tacks on that the shade is

warm beige/ for moderately fair skin tones with golden undertones

Yes, I was rather surprised to have been matched with a foundation for “moderately fair” skintones. Especially given that I am at least a deep medium-to-tan. I’d have to say that this has much less a golden undertone and a much pinker one. But that i’m willing to forgive because I do have a pink undertone.

Swatch 1 (Dollop)

Swatch 2 (Spread Out)

Swatch 3 (Blended)

Putting aside my feelings about this foundation (not the right shade for me) I have to say that it is fairly true to the official product swatches, if not the description.

Application:

This product is a lot more runny than MAC Studio Fix Fluid but that doesn’t necessarily mean you need less of the product. It is a moderate coverage foundation, though the SA assured me it was buildable. It’s really not. I have used my MAC 187 and the Sigma F80 to apply this, both with mixed results. It’s a bit too runny for brushes and I imagine it would work quite well (though you would waste a lot of product) with a damp sponge. It also lends itself well to quickie finger application. I do have a hard time getting it to apply evenly though.

Before Even Better

After Even Better

The finish is nearly always a nice dewy natural one. But I simply wasn’t satisfied with the amount of coverage I got.

Wear:

This is not a great foundation if you’re looking to control oil. My t-zone was shiny within 2-3 hours. I did find that the foundation stuck around my skin for a full day, about 6-8 hours of wear depending on things like primer, powder, heat, friction etc. It was still visible on my makeup removing towelette except for where blotting and powder had made it disappear.

Results:

Having been using this foundation for about a month now, I can’t say i’ve seen any drastic improvements in my skin. After giving it that trial period I’ve retired it in favor of my SFF, though I occasionally break it out on days where I don’t feel I’ll need full coverage. I didn’t feel it corrected any discoloration or had any benefits at all for my skin. Meh.

Summary:

Clinique’s Even Better is a good foundation for those that don’t demand much change. If you’re looking for lightweight, dewy, light to moderate coverage and don’t have any oily skin areas – i’d say give it a try. After all, Clinique is allergy tested so at the very least you know that won’t be an issue!

Value: 4/5

Packaging: 4/5

Color Accuracy: 9/10

Application: 7/10

Wear: 8/10

Results: 5/10

Overall: 74% (C)

However, if you have problem skin that needs coverage and healing? This is no miracle worker. It’s a good foundation – just not for me.

P.S. For The Curious, on the Left is MAC's SFF in NW35 and on the Right is Clinique EB in Honey

All for now!

I do like the finish! I think I have some of this somewhere, but I think the shade ended up not looking great on me. Ah, well. Such is life.

  2. I wasn’t impressed with this one either. It didn’t cover much and didn’t do anything else for me.
I don’t really get it when foundations promise to give skincare benefits.

  6. Moderately fair? WHAT THE? That is bizarre! Clinique’s foundations always run darker than the description. Fair is always at least medium. Have you tried Diorskin Forever? It’s pricey but HOLY SHT does it look amazing! To be totally and completely honest, I would have never guessed you had skin discoloration. :)

I think this evens out your skin really well, too bad about the colour & coverage though.I personally prefer foundations with a bit more coverage so I’ll be skipping this one. Thanks for the super detailed swatches!

The only clinique foundation I like is the superfit one…my perfect colour is golden beige and since you and I are more or less the same shade, I think you should give it a go. Its a great full coverage foundation.

I don’t like the look of this one, to be honest!

  11. I was invited along to Clinique today to meet someone from head office (don’t want to name names just incase :) ) and was colour matched to a foundation and like you I was a little shocked at the shade she chose (03 neutral) as i’m normally around the 5th shade in and classed as light/medium skin NC35/37 but in clinique I come under as fair – i’ve never been fair in my life haha! But as you mentioned it oxidises quite a bit and after a few hours in the shade match was perfect. Sad to see it didn’t work out for you but if you have a Clarins counter near by I do recommend asking for a sample of their ever matte foundation :) x
